A Time of Preparation

As we draw near the Lenten season we are beginning the time of penance, prayer, preparation for or recollection of baptism, and preparation for the celebration of Easter.

To truly understand the significance of Lent we have to go back to the birth of Christ.  “He was born of the Virgin Mary, a man like us in all things but sin.”  Christ came to earth to live the life that we live.  He felt pain, hunger, sorrow, agony and joy just like we feel today.  His physical body was just like ours.

He lived his life as an example of how we as Christians should be living our lives today.  He taught that discrimination of any kind was wrong; he taught that love was the only way to live.

He said in John 15:12 “This is my commandment that you love one another as I have loved you” also in John 15:17, “My command to you is to love one another” and in Matthew 5:44 “But I say this to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”  The Gospels are full of Christ telling us about love.

Ok, so what has this to do with preparation and the significance Lent?   Christ showed us through his life the importance love and at the end of being prepared.  He showed us in his last days how to understand the true meaning and purpose of Lent.

Prior to his death he spent time in prayer on the Mount of Olives, preparing himself for what was to come.  His human side came out as he prayed, Luke 22:42 “Father if you are willing, take this cup away from me.  Nevertheless, let your will be done, not mine.”   He knew what God’s plan was and was willing to lay down his life for us.  His love prepared him for what was to come.  John 15:13, 14 “No one can have greater love than to lay down his life for his friends.  You are my friends if you do what I command you.”

Just like Christ we have to be ready to die to the world, in order to be born into salvation.  Until we are ready to say “Nevertheless, let your will be done, not mine” will we truly understand the meaning of Lent.

As the season draws near we need to spend quiet time in prayer, and most importantly spend time listening.

May God bless you and may you find the true joy of this season.
